If it's Worth Doing, it's Worth Doing Well

If it's Worth Doing, it's Worth Doing Well

"If it's worth doing, it's worth doing well." - Alex Hormozi

There is honor in hard work. The act of working hard and fully committing to something, no matter how seemingly unimportant the task may be, is commendable. So if you're gonna do something, give it everything you've got.

This quote popped into my head yesterday as I was half-assing something. I whipped out the surf board for the first time this season. I am still very much a beginner surfer, but I love it. Incredible full body workout. The mental health benefits are even greater. Even if I go out there for an hour and don't hit a single wave (which happens often), I still thoroughly enjoy myself. It's truly meditative just being out there - hanging on the board, one with the ocean.

I got off to a slow start. Didn't even come close to getting up on a wave for at least the first half hour. After the slow start, I found myself getting complacent. Then I snapped out of it. I wasn't trying nearly as hard as I could be. I thought of the quote and actually started yelling it out loud over and over in the ocean like a freak. Within 5 minutes, I (kind of) got up on 3 consecutive waves. My performance increased significantly by channeling that quote.

Whether you're cleaning toilets, or closing multimillion dollar deals in a boardroom, it is honorable to work hard and do a good job. People will notice. And you will eventually be rewarded for your efforts.

Build the habit of always ATTEMPTING excellence at everything you do. But set the expectations for the OUTCOME accordingly. Because if it's something new, you're gonna stink at first. If you know you gave it 100%, even if the outcome ended up nowhere near where you wanted it to be, you should be proud of yourself.

As someone who is about to become a parent, I've been reading a lot of parenting books. Regular guidance: applaud your child's effort, not necessarily the result. Teach them the habit of working hard at everything they do. Teach them how to become completely numb to failure. True character is revealed during setbacks, not the good times. You only lose if you quit. So if you never quit, you will never lose, and therefore inevitably win.
