Be a Psycho. Be Obsessed.
"Obsession is the antidote to mediocrity, action the antidote to anxiety, and purpose the antidote to laziness." - Alex Hormozi
I build pretty absurd narratives in my head to keep me motivated. I take seemingly minor everyday exchanges, and turn them into narratives that can keep me motivated for YEARS.
Example 1: "Hal, I'm excited to see how kids will impact your fitness journey."
A best friend said this when Amy was still pregnant. He definitely didn't mean it as a challenge, but being a psycho, I chose to take it another way - as a challenge. The implication that I would fall off the wagon once kids entered the picture. Or even worse - that the only reason I've been able to get in such good shape is because I don't have any kids yet.
I've been counting down the days until I could start proving the implication wrong. We're only ~6 weeks into being parents, but I'm: tracked my food 39/40 days, 19/19 on my workouts, averaging ~12.5k steps per day. I will be destroying the limited belief that you can't be in good shape as a parent.
Example 2: "But you're having a girl, right?"
A coworker implied I'd only want to get super jacked for a boy. WTF. I'd argue it's even more important to be in incredible shape for your daughter. A dad is the ultimate display of masculinity for his daughter. The way a dad looks and acts will create the model that his daughter will seek in a partner as she gets older. She won't settle for anything less than elite if you create the standard. That's something that will literally keep me motivated forever.
Example 3: "I'm sorry I don't have the bandwidth."
I reached out to a girl who quit finance to start her own health coaching company, hoping to reconnect. Got ignored twice, then got bandwidth'd. It's completely in her rights to decline. But it still stung. I've turned this experience into motivation. We'll know who got the last laugh when Health Coaching with Hal becomes a million dollar business. And even then, I won't be bandwidth-ing people who seek out my help.
Be a psycho about something this week to boost motivation. It works.
Stay well, Hal the Health Coach
